Dreams are defined as the images that come to us during moments of sleep, which have different contents. There may be altered states of consciousness when a person is dreaming, such as change of character, and appearance. Generally, we see in dreams the contents of our daytime activity.

Everybody dreams. Some people may claim that they do not dream. This might just be the case of not remembering what they dreamed about. There are people who are better in remembering their dreams and there are some who are not.

When a person does not dream, it means that certain part of the brain has been damaged. This rare disturbance is called the Charcot-Wilbrand syndrome or simply the loss of the ability to dream. The name is derived from the two neurologists, Jean-Maritn Charcot, and Hermann Wilbrand, who first described it in the 1880s.

The syndrome is quite rare, especially those cases wherein there’s a lack of symptoms other than dream loss.

REM is where the eyes move rapidly beneath the eyelids. It has been believed that people only dream during REM sleep, but it was discovered that REM and dreams are two independent entities as they are located in different locations in the brain.

REM occurs during deep sleep stages and dreams which take place during this period are more vivid. Nightmares are also believed to take place during REM sleep. Some medications and medicines such as anti-depressants are said to stop REM sleep; however, it is still possible for dreams to take place.
